Sony Photography Awards 2015

I was in London yesterday, and paid a visit to the Sony Photographic Awards at Somerset House.  This was the first time I had been, and I had a thoroughly good time.  The awards are open to amateur and professional photographers, and cover a wide range of photography subjects.

As usual there were photographs that you wonder how they got there (but like everything in art it’s all down to personal taste).  In general though there were some really great photos, and enough to inspire you to improve your own technique, and story telling.  Quite often it’s a very simple idea that has been photographed.

As it was Sony who sponsored the awards, there was plenty of large 4K TVs to show off some of the pictures.  Very easy to notice over sharpening 🙂

All in all for £8.50 is was well worth the money, and I would certainly go again.  I also had a wander around London and took this album.

While I was in London over Christmas, I went and had a look at two photography exhibitions.

The first was the Landscape Photographer of the Year.  This seems to have moved from the National Theatre to Waterloo Station, and I’m not sure it’s for the better.  I guess there maybe more footfall, and supposedly the pictures are displayed on a huge screen above the concourse (although I didn’t see any), but I don’t think the general presentation of the pictures was very good.  It all seemed a bit cramped.  As you would expect though,  there are some fantastic shots – not many where you think, “really??”.  So it’s well worth going to see and especially as it’s free (Although all the photos are online anyway).

The second exhibition was the Taylor-Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery.  This is the second time I’ve been, and I really like this exhibition, but there are always some photos that you aren’t sure how the got in!   Again though there are some excellent pictures although the winning one actually looked more like a painting.  I wasn’t sure if it had been processed or that’s how it came out due to the light.  There is a charge for the exhibition, but I bought the book and you get the ticket priced knocked off… which is nice.

We recently visited “The Edible Garden Show” at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.  There was many things to see, and advice to be had, but my favourite part was the small holding section with pigs, goats, hens and ducks.  As we were there in the afternoon, it seemed to be when most of the pigs were having a siesta. These were my favourites.
